More U.S. women died around the time of childbirth last year, reversing two years of decline. The CDC says 688 people died last year during pregnancy or shortly after giving birth. That’s up from 669 deaths in 2023, but down from 2022 and 2021, when it was the highest level in more than 50 years.
A police officer killed while responding to a Pennsylvania hospital siege was struck by a shotgun blast fired by another officer that also hit the attacker as he held a hospital worker hostage with a gun to her head, a prosecutor disclosed Wednesday. The attacker and West York Patrolman Andrew W. Duarte were killed in the gunfire at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York on Feb. 22, while several other officers and hospital employees were injured.
The company announced Wednesday that the acquisition of UpLift, a virtual therapy and psychiatry provider, deepens its footprint in virtual mental health services and further enables it to provide those services on an in-network basis. UpLift’s payer partnerships cover over 100 million lives with a network of about 1,500 mental health clinicians, according to a news release from Teladoc.
