The North Idaho State Veterans Home was unveiled in Post Falls on Friday, 23 years after local veterans began working to bring to the region a nursing facility for men and women who have served our country, as reported by our news partners, the Coeur d'Alene Press. More than 300 people, including Gov. Brad Little, former Gov. Butch Otter, Post Falls Mayor Ron Jacobson, local veterans group representatives, the Northwest Guardian Riders, veterans, veterans families and countless others showed up to the grand opening of the new facility.
The nursing home sector in Massachusetts says its worker shortage remains at "historic highs," as senior care facilities struggle to find and retain people qualified to care for the state's most vulnerable residents. Massachusetts Senior Care Association reported Wednesday that its recent quarterly survey, taken over the summer, showed that 6,900 registered nurse, licensed practical nurse and certified nurse assistant positions were open at nursing facilities, representing 22% of those jobs that are unfilled. More than 3,900 of the unfilled jobs were CNA positions.
A government oversight program that protects frail and elderly New Yorkers failed to conduct visits at about 59% of nursing homes and adult care facilities during a three-month period this year. The lack of visits by the state Long Term Care Ombudsman Program came to light in a new report by elder advocate AARP New York. Some of the worst-performing regions included parts of the Finger Lakes, Southern Tier and Hudson Valley. The visit data spanned from January through March, the most recent available.

Highmark President and CEO David Holmberg received $8.64 million in compensation in calendar year 2021, an 11% raise from his previous year’s wages and benefits of $7.82 million, according to new financial information that was released Friday. In the bonus and incentive portion of his remuneration, which is the biggest portion of the total pay package, Mr. Holmberg received $6.47 million, a 16% increase from $5.59 million that he received in 2020.
Nurses who work at 21 Kaiser Permanente hospitals in Northern California plan to hold a two-day strike later this month to continue voicing their concerns about chronic short-staffing and workplace health and safety. The strike is scheduled for Nov. 21 and 22, and includes Kaiser Permanente medical centers in Sacramento, south Sacramento, Roseville, Modesto, Manteca, and Fresno.
