In 2023-24, CDC Estimates COVID-19 vaccination averted more than 5,000 US in-hospital deaths, 13,000 intensive care unit (ICU) admissions, and 68,000 hospitalizations in 7 months in 2023-2024, researchers from the CDC estimated, although with considerable uncertainty. The investigators estimated COVID-related deaths ... using a novel multiplier model that used causal inference, conditional probabilities of hospitalization, and correlations between data elements in simulations.
More than one million Floridians have had their health insurance revoked as a result of a nationwide disenrollment from coverage that was previously safeguarded as part of the COVID-19 pandemic response. Medicaid and CHIP enrolment in Florida has fallen from 5.1 million to 3.8 million between March 2023 and October 2024, according to KFF. While some people may be re-enrolled, transition to employer-sponsored plans, or search for coverage in the wider healthcare marketplace, the decline poses a risk to Florida's most vulnerable populations and underscores challenges in effectively communicating healthcare policies to the public. The Sunshine State lags behind the national average in terms of coverage, ranking fourth in the U.S. for the number of uninsured individuals under 65, according to Census Bureau data cited by Axios.

Those who lose weight on Ozempic often find success has left them with sagging skin—a common side effect that is driving a boom in cosmetic surgery. Plastic surgeons say they have long had patients who wanted taut skin after bariatric surgery, an operation modifying the stomach. But the weight-loss drugs have prompted a surge in demand for such body-lift procedures, especially from younger patients. Some doctors call what they are doing a 360-degree body lift, which comprises multiple areas of skin tightening around the abdomen, hips, buttocks, lower back and even breasts and arms.
The decision to sell nonprofit Mission Health to for-profit HCA Healthcare was made behind closed doors, without public review, and, contrary to promises made by Mission's leadership at the time of the 2019 sale, did not lead to lasting improvements at Mission Hospital, according to the final two installments of an academic study of the merger. Though HCA made improvements to the western North Carolina health care system, according to the Wake Forest University report, many were already planned or required by then-Attorney General Josh Stein as part of the terms of the sale. "[I]t is difficult to point to any concrete lasting improvements that HCA has brought to Mission Hospital," the report states. "It is telling that, even under the most favorable viewpoints, there is no credible voice openly claiming that Asheville and western North Carolina are actually better off now with HCA at the helm of Mission."
