California Senate approves bill allowing nurse practitioners to perform abortions

A bill by California Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins, D-San Diego, to allow qualified nurse practitioners to perform first- trimester abortions without a supervising physician was approved by the state Senate Tuesday.

Senate Bill 1375 passed by a vote of 31-9 and is a component of several reproductive health bills introduced this year by the California Legislative Women's Caucus.
