Big hospitals increase dominance of MA state healthcare market

The state's biggest hospital systems increased their dominance of the state's health care market over the past five years, grabbing share from smaller, and typically less costly community hospitals, according to a state report released Wednesday. The share of patients discharged from community hospitals fell to 17 percent from 29 percent of the market five years ago, while the five biggest hospital systems gained patients, according to the report from the Health Policy Commission. The state's five biggest systems are Partners HealthCare, Steward Health Care, UMass Memorial Health Care, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Lahey Health.
