Salem Medical Center is expected to join the New Jersey health system in 2022.

New Jersey-based Inspira Health Network announced Monday that it has signed a definitive agreement with Salem County Hospital Corporation to acquire one of its hospitals.

Inspira Health president and CEO, Amy Mansue, issued a statement announcing that Salem Medical Center (SMC), located in Salem, New Jersey, will be joining the health system.

According to Mansue, the medical center shares the same vision as Inspira in bettering the health of the communities they serve. "This is a milestone moment for our organization as it furthers Inspira's commitment to increase access to convenient, high-quality health care in South Jersey," she said in the statement.

"Joining forces with Inspira will mean so much to our hospital – to our physicians, to our staff, to our community," SMC CEO, Tammy Torres, said in a statement. "Our partnership will allow us to continue to serve the community by providing the latest in medical and communication innovation. This is an important – and exciting – moment for our hospital and for Salem County."

The merger will enable the medical center to expand its service offerings, including the expansion of women's services, expanded primary care practices, cancer treatments, urgent care, and access to affiliations with university hospitals.

According to the press release, the merger will benefit the medical center in many ways, including sustainability, which is "benefit no. 1."

SMC is expected to join Inspira in 2022, pending review and approval by the New Jersey Attorney General. Mansue noted that additional details will be released as they become available.
