Unionized nurses demanded a fair contract as they rallied on Thursday outside of St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children and Hahnemann University Hospital. Their union, the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals (PASNAP) is negotiating collective bargaining agreements with their employer American Academic Health System, but have not reached a deal.
A former registered nurse for Legacy Health has filed a class action lawsuit against the Portland hospital network, claiming that it systematically denied meal breaks to non-exempt nursing staff and failed to pay overtime.
Katina Currier took lots of pictures with her fellow nurses in the lobby of Sturgis Hospital. They all cried, she said. And said good-bye. Then they walked out of the hospitals doors with blue and pink balloons in their hands. “We put a message on our balloons and just sort of launched our hopes and our dreams away,” Currier said during an interview. “I put Good-bye and OB Family Forever.”
Oklahoma needs more nurses, though no one is quite sure how many, a workforce committee concluded in a recent study showing many nurses on the verge of retirement. The health subcommittee of the Governor's Council for Workforce and Economic Development recently released a report outlining ways to increase the number of nurses working in Oklahoma.
More than four in five Americans (84%) again rate the honesty and ethical standards of nurses as "very high" or "high," earning them the top spot among a diverse list of professions for the 17th consecutive year. At the same time, members of Congress are again held in the lowest esteem, as nearly 58% of Americans say they have "low" or "very low" ethical standards. Telemarketers join members of Congress as having a majority of low/very low ratings.
