Proponents of ObamaCare are celebrating the end of year one with reports of favorable results: More than 23 million people have coverage provided through the Affordable Care Act (ACA), including 10 million who were previously uninsured and 10 million more covered through the Medicaid Expansion program. Fans of the ACA are quick to remind us that year-two enrollment has started off well with a functioning website; over 6 million consumers selecting a plan in the first six weeks; and premium rate increases on par with the employer-based market. So what's not to like?
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Wednesday that many people have been sickened and one has died after receiving intravenous fluids that were meant to be used for training purposes only. News of the death comes less than a month after the FDA told physicians not to use simulated intravenous products made by Wallcur LLC, a private company based in San Diego, California that makes products for medical training. Nurse Family Partnership works like this: It pairs a low-income, first-time mother with a trained nurse, who counsel her throughout the pregnancy and until her child's second birthday. The nurses visit the mothers frequently in their homes and offer guidance on everything from nutrition during pregnancy to breastfeeding to caring for a newborn and child development. In many instances, the nurses also play the role of social worker to help the mothers apply for government assistance, if they qualify; navigate tricky family dynamics; or escape abusive relationships. And they mentor young mothers as well, encouraging them to finish their educations, apply for better-paying jobs, and set themselves on a path to financial stability, so they can support their families.
