Houston Methodist is mapping out healthcare transformation over the next three years. Here are the most innovative technologies and strategies on that roadmap.

Some healthcare organizations target two, three or maybe five key technology and innovation trends to follow in the coming years. But with an urgent need to transform how healthcare is done, Houston Methodist is keeping an eye on no less than 10 impactful strategies over a three-year time span.

It’s not the health system’s first rodeo, either.

Roberta Schwartz, Houston Methodist’s EVP and Chief Innovation Officer, says leadership spends a lot of time identifying where the industry is going, and then laying the groundwork to make sure they’re on that cutting edge. This game plan helped them to plan out and open Cypress Hospital earlier this year, a state-of-the-art facility that’s now known as the hospital of the future.

And while AI, digital health, virtual care and an enhanced EHR are all on the list, the foundation for all this transformation lies in proper leadership and coaching, to make sure everyone is ready for these changes.

"I always tell people that tech is 25% of the problem, but 75% is change management," Schwartz says. "We can't just add this technology and not do the change management that's necessary and expect to get out a better result. A lot of it requires doing things differently. Doing things differently is really, really hard."
